Special guests for a special event
David Wong and Shlomo set to make BMM '08 extra special

David Wong, winner of the Brent Young Musician of the Year 2008 competition
We are delighted to welcome David Wong as the honoured guest soloist for Brent Makes Music 2008.
David secured the title of Brent Young Musician of the Year 2008 by qualifying for the final competition through his audition in January.  He then performed at the March finals and faced very difficult competition from the five other finalists.

After very encouraging and congratulatory comments to all the competitors, the adjudicators’ decisions were announced awarding David Wong of Westminster School the title of ‘Brent Young Musician of the Year 2008’ for his engaging clarinet performance of Debussy’s ‘Premiere Rhapsodie’, accompanied by Anna Mitchell on piano.

The adjudicators were made up of Sarah Crisp (professional violinist and teacher), Terry Gardner (professional trombonist and Flight Sergeant of the RAF Central Band) and Jagdeep Singh Sehra (professional singer, tabla and dhol player and teacher).

A former student of Brent Music Service’s Saturday morning school, David Wong took up the clarinet at the age of 8.  A mere 6 years later he can be proud of already having achieved Grade 8 (Distinction) on this instrument and a host of memorable solo performances which include St John’s Smith Square Hall and a charity concert at the Hilton Hotel in aid of the Tsunami victims.

His musicianship has also expanded to Violin and Piano for which he holds Grade 8 in each and Saxophone for which he has reached Grade 7. His musical inspirations include clarinettist Professor Karl Leister and when asked what his musical ambitions were, his honest reply was “Too early to say really, but at the moment I just want to enjoy making excellent music”.

One of the world’s leading beatboxers, Shlomo has worked for years to push the boundaries of beatboxing as an artform.

From the mouth
Shlomo can make music with his mouth that you cannot begin to imagine. His ability to create all manner of drum sounds, vocal scratches and complex rhythmic beatbox techniques have seen him perform all over the planet, work with a whole host of international artists, and become a YouTube sensation!

He has worked and performed with artists such as Mr Scruff, the Swingle Singers, Damon Albarn, the Specials, Bill Bailey and his own hip hop crew Foreign Beggars.

Shlomo has recorded music for the Olympic Games with Björk, appeared on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’ and appeared at Glastonbury.

He makes original human music through any means possible, be it loop sampling, group performance or collaborative improvisations.

Also a talented jazz drummer and classically-trained percussionist, Shlomo treats the art of beatboxing as a form of music and a means for creative expression.

Brent Music Service are delighted to welcome Shlomo, his crew and the "One Voice" beatboxers to Brent Makes Music 2008.

Brent Council's Arts & Festival Department formed the "One Voice" project and commissioned Shlomo to work with a selection of Brent vocalists to develop a new piece for performance at Brent Makes Music, together with the Brent Respect Festival and the Brent event to celebrate the 2012 Olympic handover.  The "One Voice" project forms part of Brent's cultural offer to the 2012 West London Story.

Brent Music Service are particularly proud of their own Brent Junior Choir being an integral part of this project and believe that Shlomo and  the One Voice group (which also includes a mass gospel choir, a Brazilian choir called Nossa Voz, and a contemporary choir called The Heard) will enthrall the audience with their first public performance at Brent Makes Music 2008.

You can find out more about Shlomo by visiting his website at www.shlo.co.uk, or better still, see him in action by coming to Brent Makes Music 2008.
